2D and 3D Pregnancy Ultrasound in Miami
Pregnancy Ultrasounds
Seeing your baby for the first time is such a remarkable time for women. OBGYN Pavilion provides ways for you to see your baby during this exciting and scary time in your life through 2D and 3D ultrasounds.
Ultrasounds have been used during pregnancy for over 30 years. Since ultrasounds use sound waves and not radiation they are deemed safer than x-rays and have not been found to harm the baby or mother. The baby’s sex could be determined through the use of a pregnancy ultrasound in Miami at around 16 weeks of your pregnancy.
Ultrasound Pictures
There are two main types of ultrasounds, 2D and 3D. Depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy and the images you would like to see, you may choose one over the other.
2D Ultrasound
The 2D ultrasound is a traditional method to view your baby and has been used for years. They provide a 2-dimensional black and white image. The 2D ultrasound allows you to see your baby’s internal organs such as the heart, the position of the baby, placenta, and cord, and its size and growth can also be seen.
Like any ultrasound, it is performed by a health professional that is trained in radiography, called a sonographer. About an hour before the ultrasound, you will be asked to drink water so your bladder will fill up and lift your uterus, making the images clearer. A warm gel is applied on to the stomach to reduce any chance of resistance between the transducer and the skin, making for a clear image.
Rather than use a transducer to send sound waves through the stomach, there is another way to have an ultrasound. In a transvaginal ultrasound, the sonographer will insert a specially shaped device into the vagina. The sound waves will travel up the cervix and into the uterus. This type of ultrasound is good for those who are still in the earlier stages of pregnancy and would like to see the development of the embryo.
A 2D ultrasound is usually done between 18 and 20 weeks of being pregnant. At this time, you will be able to see the sex of the baby, where the placenta is in the womb, and check if there are any birth defects or abnormalities.
3D Ultrasound
The process for a 3D ultrasound is similar to that of a 2D ultrasound, but the technology that is used separates the two. While a 2D ultrasound sends a sound wave and receives the echo of an image back, a 3D ultrasound takes thousands of pictures at a time allowing for a three-dimensional view of the baby and the womb
The 3D ultrasound projects a three-dimensional image of your baby and the scans show still images where you are able to see your baby’s distinct facial features. This is unlike the 2D ultrasound which only allows you to see the internal organs of the baby one flat photo at a time.
A 3D ultrasound is regarded to be just as safe as having a 2D ultrasound. The primary reason you might not want an ultrasound is the cost. A scary 3D ultrasound uses more advanced technology and requires a significant amount of expertise to perform. Also, you need to be further along in the pregnancy, about 26 to 30 weeks in, to fully benefit from the 3D pregnancy images.
Whether you choose a 2D ultrasound or a 3D ultrasound, you will still make cherished memories that you can take home with you and that will last a lifetime.
